Changing the tone in Lansing ----For the bad

As if we needed another example of what happens when one party controls everything for too long we get one, and it’s just one more reason why we need to change things in Lansing and send Mike McGonegal to the House. This is also another example of why we need to change leadership in the House. As the Majority Floor Leader, Chris Ward decides the daily agenda of the full house, and this is just one more example of his arrogance, attitude and rudeness. Michigan is facing real problems, and we’re going to need everyone at the table to come up with some solutions. Why is Ward trying to keep the people who represent more than half of Michigan’s residents away from the table?

Lawmakers spar over daily House agendas
Democrats contend GOP is not sharing enough information
By David Eggert Associated Press

Partisan acrimony in the state House became especially bitter Thursday when a top Democratic lawmaker said a House sergeant wrongly blocked her from seeing what bills were in a box to be taken up that day by the chamber.
Democratic Floor Leader Mary Waters of Detroit said she was trying to see the bills on the rostrum because Republicans, who hold a majority in the House, won't give Democrats a daily agenda.
"Members need to know what they're voting on," Waters said. "It could be something very critical for our districts. ... What kind of democracy is that?"
But Republicans said no lawmaker is allowed to sift through the bills because of concerns a bill could be tampered with before or after it has been voted on.
Republicans said Democrats can see a daily calendar of every bill before the House. But Democrats said the calendar doesn't tell them what measures are likely to come up for action on a given day, so they have no way to plan.
Thursday's spat capped a long-simmering dispute in the House that began last year. That's when Democrats began trying to tie bills on a variety of issues to Democratic legislation that would limit the importation of out-of-state trash and reverse Michigan's law protecting drug companies from product liability suits.
The tactic angered Republicans, who in response stopped a custom - likely started within the last decade - of making their daily voting plan available to Democrats. In response, Democrats began causing long delays on votes.
DeRoche spokesman Matt Resch said Democrats have turned their side of the House chamber into a campaign office, constantly trying to amend unrelated legislation with their pet issues. Democrats have argued their legislation is never taken up by Republicans so they have to try other ways to get their concerns addressed.

(This is so untrue, and anyone who has spent more than one session day in Lansing knows that. As an example of how the House leadership and Ward plays politics everyday of the year take the example of Rep. Kathy Angerer, D-Dundee. The popular lawmaker committed the sin of unseating an incumbent Republican two years ago, and her seat has been targeted with the same guy running against her. She can’t get any bills even considered, and even the simplest resolution from her is a no-no. something as simple as designating a battlefield in Monroe as an 1812 bi-centennial battlefield gets no consideration. Instead, she passes it on to the republican senator representing Monroe for the good of her district. However, her constituents know how responsive she is, how she fights for them and answers every letter, e-mail and phone call.
Too bad Ward can’t say the same thing.)

As if we needed another example of one party dominating for too long, I give you the city of Detroit. Your party has controlled every aspect of Detroit politics for years and look what we have. It's not a puddle of blue in a sea or red, it's a puddle of crap. Compromising? Working together to "get things done"? Better check out a city council meeting and watch the Democratic ideals in action. Yeah, let's elect more democrats for Lansing; they can fix the state like they fixed Detroit; and Flint; and Benton Harbor. Spare us the rhetoric.

We’re trying to unseat a two-term incumbent who holds a leadership position in the state House that’s controlled by the republicans from a county that’s predominantly republican and we can’t point out his shortcomings? Get real. When is pointing out facts mudslinging? We are going to use every weapon at out disposal to point out why Mike McGonegal is a better candidate that Chris Ward. We’re taking that campaign door-to-door and into cyberspace.
Obviously, many Ward supporters don’t want us to point out his shortcomings, but people need to know how he has poisoned the atmosphere in a body where compromise and working with the opposition has been a hallmark of this nation since the Constitutional Convention some 219 years ago.

Despite the manufacturing jobs that were once abundant in Detroit going to China and other third world countries, Detroit is one of the most vibrant cities in America. You need to get out more and really see paradise, roger.
Obviously, Compromising and working together to get things done is foreign to you, so you must have flunked U.S. History.
I’ve have been to many city council meetings, primarily Howell and Brighton, but those are nonpartisan.
You cannot possibly believe the problems facing Detroit, Flint and Benton Harbor are unique to those cities? What about all the good jobs that are leaving those cities for Third World Counties? That’s the city council’s fault? You should watch a great documentary about Flint called “Roger and Me,” and then talk to me. How many Whirlpool products are made in Benton Harbor? The middle class in this country is fast disappearing and the gap between the rich and the rest of us is widening every day, and your solution is “Spare us the rhetoric.”
We most definitely need someone like Mike McGonegal in Lansing.

Detroit vibrant? You got to get more than 3 blocks from the river my man. I've been all over the country; and if you think Detroit is vibrant, it's a good thing you work for the Democrats. Working together and getting things done is what I do. Partisan politics isn't. "Roger and Me"? Surely you jest. The laughable "documentary" by Mike Moore? Isn't he the doofus that gave us "Bowling for Columbine" as well? Now there's a guy to follow. Why do you suppose the good jobs are leaving those cities? They are all Democratically controlled. You know, high taxes, union shops, anti-business atmosphere. Stuff like that. You're damn right it's city council's fault. So, what's your guy got to offer? More taxes?
Forced minimum wage? Socialized medicine? Anti second amendment? Re-distribution of wealth? I'm no big fan Chris Ward, so I hope your guy has something to offer other than the tired old Democratic ideals of more government, more taxes and redistribution of wealth.
By the way; straight A's in history
son; high school and college. US,
European and World.

Detroit Vibrant? Yes, “my man.” Is it perfect? No, but it’s one of America’s great cities.
If “working together and getting things done is what you do” then there is no way you can support Chris Ward.
No I “don’t jest.” “Roger and Me,” as well as “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 911” are excellent, hard-hitting documentaries. If Michael Moore is such a “doofus” then why would the right even care what he says or produces? The answer is he’s right, and they can’t stand it.
The good jobs are not only leaving those cites, they are leaving the entire country, and it’s in search of the lowest wages possible. If they can pay 13-year-old pennies a day instead of paying a working adult who supports a family dollars an hour then so be it. How is that a city council’s fault?
It’s the republicans that are for more government, more taxes for the middle class and more wealth for the wealthy. I know those are clichés, but they are truer today than ever.
As for the straight A’s, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, but you could have fooled me based on your stance that compromising to get things done.

"Change the tone?" You can start by telling us where Mr. McGonegal stands on the issues. I already know about Chris Ward's record.

Give me a reason to vote for Mike McGonegal. Why is he better? All I see so far is a choice between status quo and a horse's rear end. That's the impression I have of him so far.

You're basing you're astute assessment of Mike on what? Hve you met him?

No, I haven not met him. I am not in his district since I live in Fowlerville. I'm commenting since this race affects my county.

I'm basing my assessment of Mike on what I have seen so far on his official campaign blog. I do not want to hear about why Chris Ward sucks. I want to hear about why Mike McGonegal is a good guy.

Mike, your last post makes me wonder even more why you would call a man you haven’t met a horse’s ass. I suggest you read his bio and his Millpond speech that I have post here and actually meet him before you make the final decision that he’s a horse’s behind. If after you meet him and you still hold that view, then that’s fine, at lest you made the effort, and you are entitled to your opinion.
It doesn’t matter if you’re not in the 66th District because this is a free speech zone where we encourage debate and the free exchange of ideas and opinions, unlike the republican blog, the republican Michigander. You can post anything under any name as long as it’s not libelous. BTW, there’s a great candidate for your district in the 47th named Mary Andersson. She has a ton more experience than the incumbent.
I think it’s more than relevant what the incumbent has done in while in office, and I will continue to point out Ward’s mistakes, arrogance and preference to special interests and lobbyists.
Also, Mike’s phone number and e-mail are listed her, so if you don’t get the opportunity to meet him around town call him.

Sounds like you've been fooled quite a bit in your political career. Your problem is that I have a better chance of being elected to the state house than your guy does, and I'm not even running for anything. But I'll tell you what; if your guy will stop handing over property to developers and can stop the Latson Road interchange from spreading even more sprawl in our county, I'll give him a look on election day.

Thanks for the post and the look see, Roger. I’m not exactly sure what you mean by your post, but I appreciate you taking the time to express your opinion. We want to hear all opinions. I’m not sure why you think you have a better chance than Mike getting elected. I hate to assume what you are thinking or put words in your month, but you might mean because many people in this county just vote straight party instead of comparing the two candidates. All we ask is you give Mike a look and a fair chance, and then you look at what the incumbent is doing and who he is representing. It’s not the constituent of the 66th District.
