DFP editorial catches on to opponent’s divisive scare tactics

An editorial today in the Detroit Free Press catches on to what our opponents has tried to do in the past by playing the race card and playing suburban Livingston County schools against urban Detroit Public Schools.

“Earlier, an independent committee with conservative Republican ties bought misleading newspaper ads claiming four incumbent Democrats supported "extra funding" for Detroit Public Schools. In fact, the "extra funding" was part of basic school aid bills that passed the Legislature with near-unanimous votes.”

You can see our response called “Ward again forgets his party controls the House and blames Detroit for Problems” first posted here on Sept. 26. It was a response to a story where Mr. Ward plays the race card and used the old standby divisive issue and scare tactic of playing suburban Livingston County Schools against urban Detroit Public Schools.

This editoral also answers his recent press release touting his acceptance of the “Make a Difference Award” from the Huron Valley Schools Board of Education.

The editorial concludes by saying if his party “…are really serious about building bridges, they should stop others in the party from burning them.” It’s a little too late, and Mr. Ward has spent the last four years blazing bridges. Our opponent has so soured the atmosphere between the two parties that there is no cooperation between the two parties and no real legislation that benefits the entire state is getting done.

It’s really nice to see so many people exercising their 1st Amendment right and commenting here. If I have not welcomed you to the blog and thanked you for your responses this is the official welcome.

I have no idea why any newspaper endorsed Mr. Ward because they based it on God knows what. However, I am not always right, and no human is ever always right. However, I am must be right about the 76 posts on this blog because no one has refuted any or proved any of them incorrect yet.

I thank you so much for your vote anonymous, but I must disagree with your position on newspapers. I am a huge supporter of newspapers, and I have had ink in my blood ever since I had a Detroit Free Press paper route when I was 12. I love the smell of newsprint and ink in the morning, it smells like, victory.
. However, I think the problem with the “local rag,” as you call, is that it’s not the local rag. The P & A endorsements were once local decisions that were well thought out and based on a personal endorsement interview and their records, and the endorsement actually carried some weight and meant something. However, it now appears the local endorsements for Gannett are made at corporate HQ in Virginia. If that’s not the case then maybe the newspaper’s executive editor can set us straight and tell us what they now base endorsements on.

We would love to have a debate with Mr. Ward, anywhere at anytime. We only need an audience of two people, and we are ready. We challenged him, but we have not heard from him or his staff.

Do you believe Mr.McGonegal has a realistic potetial for victory or are you just going through the motions so that Mr.Ward will not take his position for granted and will have an opponent. If Mr.Mcgonegal fails is it because the incumbent can't be defeated or just because Ward is slicker than Bill Clinton? ASSUMING ALL THE BALONEY ON THIS CITE AGAINST WARD HAS AN OUNCE OF TRUTH IN IT ie the personal stuff!

as a conservative democrat I would like Mcgonegal's take on the New Jersey Supreme Court ruling in favor of same sex unions allowing the lawmakers to honor gay marriage or some other form of civil union. Ward opposes civi union what does McGonegal say abuot it.

Of course, Mike has a realistic chance of winning this election. We know it’s an uphill battle because far too many people vote straight party ticket instead of looking at the candidate. There is no way we would work this hard for no reason, especially Mike who knocks on doors seven days a week.
I have to admit I didn’t think we had a great chance to win, and I was just hoping to make Mr. Ward accountable to the voters for the first time since the 2002 primary election. But as I said, Mike is out talking to voters every night, and he, as well as Mr. Ward’s atrocious record, has convinced me we have a real chance to win. There is no way we the status Que is what the voters of Livingston County want, and the biggest road block in solving some of the problems facing our state is the do-nothing legislature.
There is no “baloney” on this site, and everything is a fact. If it were not Mr. Ward’s supporters would have easily refuted it and punched holes in our positions. That has not happened, nor will it. We have not posted one thing about Mr. Ward’s personal life, nor have we ever made a personal attack.

This is directly from Mike,
“I have no problem with commitment within the gay community, and I would support the idea of a civil union where they could have the same defined rights and obligations married couples have. The State has a vested interest in stability and making sure, as Vice President Cheny has said, " freedom is freedom, period."”

H.B. 4959 would have prevented a vinter from selling a bottle of wine directly to a citizen of this state.Chris Ward sponsored this bill and it demonstrates he is not only bought and paid for but also that he is not a true student of government as our state law protecting wholesalers in the past was voided in May of 2005 by the U.S. Supreme Court. This bill by Ward demonstrates an assault on buisness in general and shows what some people will do for a $4000.00 donation! What does Mike McGonegal say about this and why don't people see Ward's move as anti- buisness.

speaking of bought and paid for what about all his free meals from lobyists he seems to be in bed with them...in a poetic sense of course.this wine stuff may only be the tip of a huge iceberg...

Seems to me Chris Ward and Debbie Stabenow have a lot in common. Both are ducking debates with guys named Mike. Bouchard is bitterly accusing Stabenow of ducking his debate challenge and it seems to me Ward is plain chicken to debate that other Mike, Mr. Mcgonegal.
Just the other night Mr.Ward himself was blasting Stabenow for ducking and now he has become the head DUCK.

it is funny to hear that ward plays the race card because the only race card he is interested in is the one that lists the horses at a racing event where he does not need to pay for his wine or his meals because somebody else is picking up the tab whoever said there are no free lunches never met this GUY.

WAKE up Mr.McGonegal having now heard the so called debate Ward called you a JERK and what makes you one the fact that you didn't leave your wife and date a lobbyist or gave our country one of your sons to the armed forces or worked in the private sector your whole life? Are you a JERK because you have never been bought off and have always played by the rules. So if there is any truth that your rival is in a relationship with a lobbyist and he takes free lunches from them etc. than this is fair game to discuss any body can get a divorce there is no crime there but if an elected official who currently represents you is in a serious relationship then perhaps his bad judgements and withdrawn legislation is fair game. Why does this web site claim that this is all hands off.If this ethically challenged hack called me a JERK I would point these matters out if true.Idon't know if Ward is really in a relationship with a lobbyist but if so it would seem to me that he is the JERK who may also be a criminal

If Ward will and has never taken a gift from a Lobbyist a trip from a Lobbyist or a meal from a Lobbyist then he has my vote big kahuna. Fail to see the comedy in this.

At 10:02 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's comedy to people like kuhuna when they're exposed.

When the person he's supported all along is exposed for corruption and lacking 'family values' what other alternative does he have but to make a lame statement like that?

I heard over two months ago about Chris Ward's 'lack of values' and guess who asked me to 'please don't say anything about it"? Mike McGonegal asked me not to say anything! He didn't want to go negative about personal issues.

Well, sorry Mike, I've held it long enough.

Thank you for taking the time for posting, Wine Lover, and welcome to the blog. We did post a little about the shady situation with the wine bill, but obviously not enough. People’s memories are short, and that’s what our opponent is banking on. We did post something about the wine bill fiasco on July 5 from a wonderful column written by Jack Lessenberry where he said “If Chris were in another occupation, he might have a mattress strapped to his back.”

You are correct, it’s not only anti-business, who he tries to protect above all others, but it’s also anti-consumer. If you go back and look at the campaign finance reports to both his campaign and his PAC, the Michigan Beer & Wine Wholesalers gave Ward much more than $4,000. They continue to be his major contributor. They must be very grateful.

When you talk about business that’s where one of the starkest contrast between the two candidates comes into play. Mike has almost 30 years of actual business experience in the private sector, and Mr. Ward has never had a non-government job.

We welcome your input about the wine swindle, and feel free to e-mail us directly on the facts, and we will post it as a blog entry.

Welcome to the blog Beth, if I haven’t welcomed you before, and thank you for your contribution. As for your comments, the only thing I is fact is the huge tab lobbyists picked up for meals for Mr. Ward, so that’s all we will talk about. It is a documented fact that lobbyists spent $5,899 on meals for Mr. Ward, as we talked about that in the post on Aug. 18. Man, that’s a lot of burgers.
However, as for the rest of your post we will only report facts, and we ignore rumors.

Welcome to the blog and thank you for your comments, Mr. Albertson. While Mr. Ward’s marital status is no secret because he has listed it as separated on his bio on some of the candidate comparison sites, Mike said it’s not on an issue, so that’s good enough for me. While I see your point when many people want to constantly talk about family values like many in his party do, something that causes so much pain should be off-limits. As for the other stuff you bring up, we have maintained and we will continue to maintain that rumors are not something we comment on. We will continue to go after his ethically challenged record and conduct in office, and that should be enough for taxpayers who don’t want to see their tax money squandered.

I fail to see anything funny about an elected representative with that kind of shoddy record, Kahuna. It’s not funny at all it’s sad that after all that has come out about his ethics you and people like you not only continue to give him a pass but you defend him. That is more than sad it’s tragic.

At 10:51 AM, Blogger Communications guru said...

Welcome back Chris, and thanks for your continued support and input. Don’t worry about Kahuna. I have “debated” him before, and he does little but come in and offer snide comments like the last one absolutely void of facts.

I have to agree with Mike on the personal stuff. We have been hammering him so hard on his shoddy record and questionable ethics that his supports have been crying and winning about the non-existent personal attacks that we don’t want to give them even a glimmer of reality. His shoddy record speaks for itself.

At 9:53 AM, Blogger Communications guru said...

You mean your opinion as you see it, not the facts. There is nothing I can say to change your closed mind, but there are plenty of people out there who are fed up with the Legislature who do nothing but work to keep themselves in power, thwart real progress and blame the person trying to make the progress, going as far as, and Ward recently tried this, blaming that person for signing a bill they sent her. They are also fed up with a guy with questionable morals, dubious ethics and cares so little abut the voters and takes them for granted so much that he can’t be bothered to even campaign because he thinks he already has it in the bag and only makes token appearances in the district.

Mike is a family man, a successful businessman, a person accustomed to getting things done working with diverse groups of people, he has a viable jobs plan and he’s honest. Our opponent has none of that.

And we’re not talking about “the other guy.” We’re talking about his ethically challenged record and his giveaway of your money to rich supporters and developers. That’s the plan you support, Kahuna? I haven’t seen a plan from our opponent other than I’m an incumbent Republican in Livingston County and some token legislation that he knows will never become law.

The election will hinge on if Mike personally reached enough moderate Republicans and independents and whether enough people will actually look at the two candidates or where they will just say, what party is he from,” and if they hear Republican they just blindly say, “he has my vote.”

At 3:44 PM, Blogger Communications guru said...

That may be true, Kahuna, but I’m standing by my comment. You honestly do not consider this – “This is better than the comedy channel”- a snide comment? I do.

Not to be rude, but I really could care less what you think you “Observe.” I am in no way angry. I am very frustrated. I’m frustrated with the direction of my state and country. I’m amazed that you are happy with the current direction. The greatest country in the world takes away people’s freedom without a trial or even telling them what they have been charged with, it tortures people and it does away with basic privacy freedoms and the corruption is rampant. In my state unemployment is almost the highest in the nation because American companies find it can hire cheaper slave labor overseas and our government officials help them.

You are again 100 percent wrong. I have found a great way to “to place my energy.” I’m helping Mike, and every Thursday morning I drive to Monroe and work a 12-hour shift on Thursday and Friday for House Candidate Kate Ebli. What’s wrong with my “behavior in this election?” I dared to point out Mr. Ward’s ethically challenged record? Shame on me.

Wow, in Livingston County you’re predicting a Republican will beat a Democrat for sate Representative. What a bold prediction. Unseating any incumbent is an upset and an uphill battle. We are giving it our best shot, and even if we lose, maybe – but doubtful – Mr. Ward will actually pay some attention to the voters for a change. What exactly does creamed mean?

At 9:47 PM, Blogger Communications guru said...

I don’t really care what you meant with the Comedy Central snide comment, but why are you so angry? What conspiracy theory? I did not compare Mr. Ward to President Clinton nor would I ever. He can only dream of greatness like that. You ducked every single question I asked in my last post. Great job.

The things Mr. Ward did, unfortunately, are legal, unethical, immoral and shady yes, but illegal no. But I see nothing laughable about Mr. Ward trying to give rich developers and supporters huge taxpayer funded gifts. Apparently you do, and you thing its OK.

Again, I am not angry, but I am frustrated like I explained in the last post. Again, are you happy with the direction and condition of this country?

I did not miss your point about career politicians. I said he’s a career politician, and I stand by it. You look at his bio and tell me different. It’s not necessarily bad to a career politician no matter what party you are from. However, you should at least have one real job or a career before you become a career politician. The fact of the matter is this Legislature is not getting it done, and there is no reason it should not because Mr. Ward’s party has controlled both houses of Congress for more than a decade. Now, we need people like Mike who are used to actually getting things done, not people like Mr. Ward who introduce a bill that goes nowhere and says he’s doing his job.
