Ward’s offensive fat jokes fall flat

This story appeared in today’s Daily Press & Argus, and it speaks volumes about Mr. Ward’s character.

While I have to agree with him to a point that politicians are often the butt of unflattering jokes, including former Governor John Engler, but it doesn’t make Mr. Ward’s performance any less offensive to overweight people and women.

But it really illustrates Mr. Ward’s obsessive and destructive partisanship. If you need a few examples of how he has so soured the relationship between the two parties in Lansing you can find them on this blog, including refusing the years old common courtesy of simply giving out the days agenda and throwing a priest out of a committee hearing and threatening him with arrest because he wanted to speak after being promised that right.

There’s nothing wrong with partnership because I personally am partisan. But I know when to put it away, but I’m not an elected official. Mr. Ward represents the entire 66th District not just those of his own party. The structural problems facing our great state are so serious that finding a solution is going to take having everyone at the table, and it’s going to take someone who can work with a diverse group of people. That’s clearly not Mr. Ward, but that’s something Mike has been doing for almost 30 years.

Back to Mr. Ward’s performance. It seems to me a simple apology will be enough to put it behind him and move on.

DAILY PRESS & ARGUS
Jokes made by local Republican lawmakers at a recent dinner about Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow's weight have raised the ire of some local political observers.
At last week's annual Ronald Reagan Dinner held by the Livingston County Republican Party, state Reps. Joe Hune and Chris Ward did a comedy routine needling several politicians, both present and absent.
One of their targets was Stabenow, and the jokes — which went over like a lead zeppelin with the audience of approximately 400 — poked fun at her weight.
Hune and Ward joked that critics were incorrect when they criticize Stabenow for lacking substance, saying "there's nothing there." Actually, the comedy duo said, there's a lot there.
Retired Judge Daniel A. Burress didn't find that funny, saying he's received four calls, only one from a Democrat, from people who were upset about the jokes.
"It's just inappropriate," he said. "She is a United States senator, and it's a lack of respect for the office and for her ... it's just plain wrong."
Ward said he and Hune were just attempting to keep things lighthearted at the dinner, which took place Oct. 24.
"I poke fun at my own weight all the time," Ward said. "If the Democrats are concerned about that, they have a whole lot of John Engler jokes they should be taking back."
Ward was referring to the portly former Republican governor.
"I'm feeling like this is the silly season when people are complaining about jokes," Ward said.
He added that it's not unusual for Democrats, of which Burress is one, to attack Republicans in the week before an election.
Hune, no lightweight himself, said: "I'm a fat guy, so I can make fun of someone else with a weight problem. We ripped on Republicans probably more than we did Democrats. It was all in jest."
But Burress said the people who contacted him were embarrassed by the performance.
"They thought it was demeaning and embarrassing," he said.
The dominant thought at the dinner appeared to be that it just wasn't funny. Hune and Ward — who performed as the Blues Brothers at a fundraiser a few weeks ago — were cut off before they could finish their shtick.
And the keynote speaker, GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos, gave Hune and Ward a mock rebuke before starting his speech.

Who we are defines the way we respond to people. Ward is so off base with his attack on a United States Senator when all else fails attack the personal traits. So pathetic Ward is a sicko and a pathetic low life scum of the earth. He has no room to talk he is so fat from all that french restaurant dinners and free wine his picture on his web cite looks like it is from 150 pounds ago . This goon reminds me of Denny McLain who pitched for the tigers and sadly exploded in fatness due to excessing.Ward is the fat tub of lard and getting fatter from all his cases of free wine and high life style.Nice work if you can get it. This Guy is a real JERK
Why do you guys continue to take the high road? Attack this JERK simply by pointing these matters out at a news conference. Why not call a news conference to tell the public about this JERK.He is a true sociopath and you can't debate it. Ward is a Jerk pass it on!

Mr. Ward is a real mud slinger and since I am overweight I can only assume he has no need for my vote. My husband is also carrying a little more weight than he needs too. When I was in grade school I was teased about my weight so much I thought about suicide in the eighth grade and my parents took me to a doctor for help.I have learned that it is what is inside a person that makes the person and my husband is in love with me and not my waist line. My three kids call me mom and Iam sure they have never considered my weight when asking where their stuff is or what's for dinner or can we go to the movies or do I have to wash the dishes.Mr.Ward could learn a lesson from my family that it is love and not weight or good looks that makes the world go around.

Hey CG, I was wondering, what do Republicans do at a "Ronald Reagan Dinner", sit around creating record deficits, high unemployment (that's right, unemployment hit 10.1% at one point under Reagan).

Or maybe they sit around and talk about the good old days when the President sold Hizbollah terrorists, the same terrorists that murdered 241 of our Marines in Beirut, HAWK missiles out of the basement of the White House.

Yeah, nothing like a good old dinner in memory of the Gipper. Republicans are all alike.

I don't mind fat jokes by the way. Maybe because I'm not fat. Who was that fatass governor we had before this current one?

I am still waiting to hear from Mr.Ward on his plans to prevent shootings in our schools. Some signs seem to be depressed kids who are alienated with inattentive parents.Does Mr.Mcgonegal have a plan because we are the wealthiest area and I am afraid the district has a lot of kids who are depressed with inattentive parents.

As a large person I do have trouble flying in air planes or visiting amusement parks or going to a movie or out to a fast food restaurant so to me it honestly is nota funny situation. The word fat is not in my vocabulary so I think an apology to the large ones is in order from Rep.Ward.

Hope Mcgonegal is a winner just as Stabenow was when she upset the republican incumbent in 2000.To me the only thing that is silly is the idea that Ward could possibly be re-elected.Ward is obviously immature and needs to be defeated to give decency and a true visionary a shot at it.

Mr.McGonegal seems to know the secret is to become wise before you get old.

Recent and outrageous remarks on the weight of Sen. Stabenow is both troubling and perhaps telling. What does Ward say in private about Blacks or Jews or those with different sexual orientations.I smell a bigot.

I want to think all of the people who have posted here for the first time – Cathy, Angry Vet, Large, Debbie and George – for not only visiting the site but for taking the time to express your opinion. We were especially touched by the posts from Cathy and Large, and we had no idea that something like this could hurt so many people so deeply.

Mike is calling for Mr. Ward and Mr. Hune to apologize for their insensitive, offensive and hurtful remarks. Certainly not to Sen. Stabenow because we know that will never happen because of the deep partisanship animosity the two hold, but to those people who were offended and hurt. Whether they do remains to be seen. I would urge you to contact their House and campaign offices, the Livingston County GOP and the Daily Press & Argus that had the courage to run the story to express your opinions.

Mr.Ward and Mr. Hune should ask for forgiveness from the voters because the paper makes it clear that they were out of line.John Kerry is not my cup of tea but had he done something like what they did I would imagine any future political ambitions for the presidency would be over.So why not hold our local elected officials to the same strict standards. In fact they shhould be held perhaps to higher standards.I would be sick if I got a call from my daughter's teacher or school reporting to me that my 7th grader was teasing another girl who was heavy. So the article in the Argus was sad to read.I tell my daughter she can be the president some day but if it means acting like Mr.Hune and Mr.Ward then I am not so sure anymore. This my one and only comment.

Dan Meisler why let Mr. Ward get away with this. I salute you for bringing this to the attention of the voters. His and Hune's comments are boorish.
